I had to think this review over a bit before deciding on the number of stars. I went with five. I've decided to base this review on the actual story because it is a good one and I will mention a couple of other "mechanical"issues below.The story itself, I feel deserves five stars. I typically prefer shorter novellas. When I read longer novels, in many cases, I become bored. I don't like to spend so much time and effort on one story. With this book, I did not become bored at all, even though it took me awhile to get through--I generally read slowly and savor the language/writing style and details along the way.This story kept me interested to find what would happen next; it was very engaging. I won't recap the story line, since other reviewers have done that. It is almost like two stories in one that dovetail toward the end. Overall, the story was a well done epic page-turner with lots of adventure and twists along the way. If you are interested in either historical fiction in general, westerns, or even historical romance (although this book is more of an adventure tale), you'll like this one.Okay, now the "fine print." You can basically ignore from here on down unless you are nit-picky. I didn't take any stars off for what follows because the story itself was not flawed and the problems I will mention can be cleared up without altering the story at all. So it's more a matter of "housecleaning." First, there are some typos, grammar, and editing issues--for some reason, most of them come early in the book, then it clears up a bit. Don't let this deter you. Just get past them. It's a great story and mechanical issues like this are easily fixed via editing.The other, perhaps slightly more annoying problem has to do with the formatting for the Kindle ebook format. There were some strange things going on with paragraph breaks, chapter headings, and first-line-of-chapter text. I noticed this because I do a lot of HTML formatting for kindle and I know exactly what is going on with the coding to cause the anomalies. It may not be a big deal for some readers, but it is noticeable at times because you will see fused sentences and/or quotes now and again, and unindented paragraphs sometimes but not other times. I kind of got used to it after while and it didn't have anything to do with the story itself, so I'm not going to take stars off for that. As I said above, this is something that can be addressed and repaired fairly easily (maybe it already has been since I got the ebook). Just ignore it until it is fixed, because the story is a good one and you will miss out on it if you get too nit-picky.Overall, a very entertaining and absorbing story. Well done... The book was well written with minor errors..not enough to take away from the story or leave you wondering what the author intended.. Happy James found and reunited with his wife and children after 5 years but sad for the turn of events that led to such a short reunion... The book was captivating and was hard to not read entirely in one sitting.. Highly recommend this book..
