Book Sweet Tea and Spirits (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 5) Review :

I really like this series. Each book in the series seems better than the last. Perhaps it's because the author is feeling more at ease with the characters or the reader is getting more and more drawn into the plot. I don't know. In this 5th book of the series, Verity is invited to join the Historical Society of which her "almost was and might soon be mother-in-law" was the president of but lost the last election by two votes. Since Verity is more than likely going to marry her current love who happens to be the brother of the man she was going to marry, it was good to see her and Ellis' mother at least managing to be in the same room together without trying to kill each other.A few new ghosts were introduced in this book including a sweetheart for Frankie. Will love change him? The author leaves that possibility open. There is also the fact that the women's and orphan's home had a completely different history than we've been led to believe but I won't ruin the surprise by telling it. :)Suffice it to say that the killer was fairly easy to spot halfway through but the surprise with the Women's and Orphan's home made up for that! :) I just wish Verity would earn enough money to be able to buy herself some furniture and quit whining about it. I would have thought with the several thousand dollars she was given for investigating the murder in this book that she would have gone to the used furniture store in town and bought herself a bed, a table, and chairs and other necessary furniture. BUT at least she has food in the house in this book and she's not living on two granola bars and a banana a day! :)
Every book in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries gets better and better. In Sweet Tea and Spirits, Verity finally gets paid for her work and evil almost former mother-in-law Virginia gives Verity a smidgen of respect but just a smidgen nothing more. But at least she retracts her claws for the moment. Meanwhile Frankie falls in love with sweet Molly another earthbound spirit and refuses to return home with Verity first because he can't bear to leave Molly and more importantly because he insulted a powerful spirit who could actually send Frankie into oblivion-- no more Frankie in any form. Before Verity can begin a full investigation at the Historical Society, the president of the organization who was also Verity's client is murdered. When Verity tries to offer information to the police, she is met with sarcasm and all but escorted off the property. Verity is determined to honor her commitment to her client as well as, solve her murder.During her investigation she discovers all is not as it appears. Not the Home for Widows and Orphans (NKA: Sugarland Historical Society), nor sweet Molly or Mother Mary who "ran" the home. And not her client's grieving husband who has a habit of losing his wives to unfortunate accidents.Sweet Tea and Spirits has layers of characters, clues and unexpected twists and although I knew Verity shouldn't trust that saccharin sweet society member she wasn't the only possible killer. Can't wait to start the next book in the series.
