I initially saw this book through booktok so I thought to myself, why not? I just finished this book and I'm kind of in shock. What I liked about this book: strong female main character who is sex positive (i.e. there is no "oh no my virginity" or "I don't know what i'm doing") It's a nice change. Equal male partner, who treats her as his equal. Talking to animals, dragons...small enemies to lovers trope...revenge..My issues with this book...some of the themes could be triggering for SA survivors. The writing style sometimes tries too hard. Some of the sentences come across as cumbersome and I found myself re-reading them a few times before they made sense. Small editing errors that aren't as big of a distraction as the sentences but noticeable (a pair of words will repeat it self, words will be cut off, possibly wrong word)...and finally the ending. This is where my conflict lies because it was not where I hoped it would go. I legitimately was not happy with the ending (no spoilers). But hopefully this is the start of this world and it will all come to a satisfying end. I look forward to learning more about this series and delving more into this world. Give me a freaking break. Honestly.The world building is really fantastic. There's a lot of story set up at the beginning and once the actual plot takes off it's like you have to catch up and remember what you were told, but it reminds you here and there throughout who is who and what they are.My real problem is the ending. This will 1000% be spoiler-y so do not read ahead of you don't want to know the end.Come on. When main or important characters die in a great book that really makes a difference to the story, I'm a baby. Bawling my eyes out. Well, zero tears here. I was truly just stewing in disdain. By the time I realized the author was going through with what she was doing at the end I was just over it. Their deaths didn't hurt like it was meant to. I knew without a doubt the first time Aydra and Draven we're intimate in the forest that there was going to be a baby. The way they in which the author wrote how world altering it was, you could see it coming. Cue the puking (in the story). I thought what a freaking amazing way to throw something this entire world is based off of into something unexpected! Well blow that story line to shreds. What a waste. Out of ALL of the scenarios in which they COULD have gotten away, to tear them apart and burn them to a crisp at the end?..... So you could set up your REAL story, with this one as your prequel? It absolutely in every sense cheapened the whole book. The characters. Having us fall for them. Sure I got to like Dorian (ish) and (meh) Nyssa by the end, but not enough for me to continuing buying and reading just to follow THEIR story. I fell in love with Aydra and Draven. I'm not here for a character arc of the secondary characters from here on out.Extremely disappointing.
